Her name was Rype. That wasn’t really her name. It was what the strangers called her. She didn’t remember her real name. She didn’t remember anything at all.

'''Navigate through monsters, mysteries, and the will of the gods with two young extraordinary adventurers in fifteenth-century Mesoamerica as they search for a missing father.'''

−
Rype was hiding in the hollow of a tree trunk when they found her. She was hungry, small, cold, alone. She did not speak their language, or understand their mannerisms. But she knew this: To survive, she would have to go with them.
+
Donají is a fearless Zapotec girl who, even though she’s only fifteen, is heralded as a hero by her village. In Codex Black, Donají sets out on an adventure--accompanied by the god that lives inside of her poncho--to find her missing father. Along the way, she meets a 17-year-old winged Mexica warrior named Itzcacalotl, and over time their temporary partnership blooms into an incredible friendship.

−
In fourteenth-century Norway, the plague has destroyed the entire village of Skeviga. To stay alive, Rype, the only one left, must embark on a sweeping adventure across Europe with the son of an English ship captain and a band of troubadours in search of a brighter future and a new home.
+
The search brings the young pair closer to danger and deeper into the mystery than either could have predicted. What exactly was Donají’s father involved with? And how did a simple search for a missing relative lead Donají and Itzcacalotl into a fight with a terrifying bat monster to defend an entire village?!

Expertly crafted, beautifully written, and completely unique, Diane Zahler has created a historically rich, stunning story of survival and hope in the face of tragedy.

This is a story of two unexpected heroes coming together to solve a mystery. This first volume is the setup, introducing us to the characters and explaining the mystery. I found myself fully engaged with the narrative and found the characters to be really compelling and endearing. I cannot wait to see where the story goes in the next volume. I also really loved the art style, the colors are bold and bright, and the art just fits really well with the story.

I have always loved stories that are set in the medieval period, and this book properly swept me away into that time and place. We are following Rype, who was the sole survivor of her entire village in Norway after they are devastated by the plague. She is found by Owen, who names her Rype and brings her onto his father's merchant ship. From there, she and Owen end up on a quest of sorts, to get home to England to find his mother and sister. Along the way, they meet a group of troubadours and have many adventures.

−
I loved Rype's character development over the course of the story. She starts out as a small terrified girl, and by the end, she has found her place in the world and made a life for herself. I think this book has a lot to say about how to overcome tragedy, and how to find light in the darkness. I also really loved that the author wove song and music into the story. All of the characters were endearing and I enjoyed reading about their relationships.
+
The book is full of action and adventure, as our two protagonists, Donaji and Itzcacalotl travel through Mesoamerica in search of answers to the ever-growing mystery of who Donaji's father really is and what happened to him. There are monsters, a god inhabiting a poncho, and a warrior with the wings of a crow, the story is action-packed and it kept me reading to see what would happen next!

−
This book is a vivid picture of life in the 14th century and life in the midst of the Black Death. It is sad, and there were a lot of dark and even disturbing moments, but there was also plenty of light and hope. I was fully invested in Rype's story and the family she made for herself.
+
The most challenging aspect of this book for me was the names - I would have loved to have found an audiobook to pair with this just so that I could be sure I was pronouncing everything correctly, but there is a helpful guide at the back of the book.

−
I think this book would appeal more to older readers. It is labeled as middle grade, but I think this book is best suited for ages 12+
+
I recommend this one for ages 12+!

Why is HBBB a thing?

I am a list maker. I love organizing booklists, to-do lists, checklists of all kinds. I spend a great deal of my time researching books for my job and I’ve often found it frustrating that there isn’t one reliable resource where I can find an organized timeline of literature. So I’ve created one. I’ve set out to create a resource that will guide you on a literary adventure through history.

You can find books here on just about every time period or historical topic and for any age level. I’ve done my best to research and vet each title to ensure that this list is filled with living books. I’ve noted content warnings when necessary and my daughters and I have reviewed many of the titles recommended. This has been and will continue to be a labor of love, as we continue to build this website and update these book suggestions. I hope you find it helpful!

Thanks and Happy Reading, Emily
