Disillusioned by the propaganda of Nazi Germany, Sophie Scholl, her brother, and his fellow soldiers formed the White Rose, a group that wrote and distributed anonymous letters criticizing the Nazi regime and calling for action from their fellow German citizens. The following year, Sophie and her brother were arrested for treason and interrogated for information about their collaborators. This debut novel recounts the lives of Sophie and her friends and highlights their brave stand against fascism in Nazi Germany.

Books in verse don't always work for me, but this one was so well done there were moments where I forgot it was in verse. White Rose is a story of resistance and bravery. Sophie and her friends worked together to non-violently protest the Nazi regime. They created anonymous leaflets and graffiti, hoping to inspire others to resist as well.

Though the story has a very tragic ending, I don't feel like the story itself was sad - the poetry was powerful and moving, and the overall feeling this book gave me was one of hope. Even in the darkness of Nazi Germany, there were people who were willing to stand up and say that this isn't right.

This picture book, first and foremost, is a well-written account of Edmond's life. But the illustrations send it over the edge. The illustrations are captivating and really enhance the story. And the story! Sarah Edmonds lived an amazing life. She ran away from home when her family tried to arrange a marriage for her. This is when she starts dressing as a man and going by Frank Thompson. She soon joined the Union army and spent years fighting in the Civil War, participating in some of the most famous battles and working as a nurse and later a spy. She would go on to be the only woman recognized as a Civil War veteran and was even buried in a military cemetery.

Why is HBBB a thing?

I am a list maker. I love organizing booklists, to-do lists, checklists of all kinds. I spend a great deal of my time researching books for my job and I’ve often found it frustrating that there isn’t one reliable resource where I can find an organized timeline of literature. So I’ve created one. I’ve set out to create a resource that will guide you on a literary adventure through history.

You can find books here on just about every time period or historical topic and for any age level. I’ve done my best to research and vet each title to ensure that this list is filled with living books. I’ve noted content warnings when necessary and my daughters and I have reviewed many of the titles recommended. This has been and will continue to be a labor of love, as we continue to build this website and update these book suggestions. I hope you find it helpful!

Thanks and Happy Reading, Emily

Emily's Review

I was drawn to this story because I think we need more biographies about lesser-known heroes. Particularly stories about women in a male-dominated society. So when I came across a picture book about Sarah Edmonds, who was a civil war hero, I had to know more.
