It is so exciting to see so many new secular resources hitting the market! As a long-time homeschooler, I wish these resources had been available to me when my children were smaller. This new series begins with the Ancient World. What sets it apart for me, is that it is the most diverse World History text I've seen thus far. It is also one of the prettiest, with full color art work and maps included in the text. This is a gorgeous book - with gold edges and a ribbon bookmark, it is stunning.
The authors have done a wonderful job of including often overlooked cultures like Aboriginal Australia, The Jomon, Olmecs, Chavin, and several African civilizations. They also discuss why some of those cultures are left out of so many history books.
There are also myths and stories included, along with additional booklists divided by age level to help you go further in your reading if you choose.
I read several chapters along with my 12-year-old daughter, as I wanted to get a kid's perspective on this new resource. We had some great discussions as we read and followed some rabbit trails to learn more about the Australian Aboriginal culture. She also loved the art that is included. It definitely helped to keep her attention. I think some of the writing can be a little bit dense, so I would say this book would be best for kids ages 10 and up. An older child will get far more out of the writing than a younger reader.
I look forward to seeing what the authors do with the rest of the series!
